How does a tradition-steeped brand adapt to the Internet age? The question continues to puzzle fashion’s old guard. Dennis Basso’s polished look may be associated with ladies who lunch, but his Spring 2018 collection attempted to bridge the gap between his boomer clientele and the fashion influencers of Generation Y. From the reality stars in his front row at the Plaza Hotel’s Grand Ballroom to the new set of Hollywood at the back, effort was made to adapt Basso’s aesthetic to the styles and trends of today.
Celebrating 35 years in business, Basso used a portion of the collection to explore his signatures and he paid homage to the muses he’s met over the years through his theme of international travel. He focused on classics like chiffon evening gowns in arresting shades of crimson or hand-embroidered gowns delivered in shades of silver and bronze. A master with fur, Basso’s chubby chinchillas and mixed fox vests were breath taking and his transparent coat paneled in mink was different and edgy.
Sequin-covered mesh tops were worn beneath ruffled dresses and sweet minidresses lent an irresistible Lolita aesthetic.
Clothes came in the colors white, cream, grey, black, purple, blue, red, bronze, blush pink, green, silver and gold.
Accesories included head bands, turbans, beaded necklaces, fringed strappy heels, boleros, capes, sumptuous crocodile leather jackets and fabulously glitzy diamond drop earrings.
This was indeed a collection for all of the ages… 3 cheers for Dennis Basso!
